On-Line Games and School Grades:
Online games are games that can be played by a person sitting at home and can have different levels depending on how much one wants to invest. They are a source of entertainment, fun and exercise for many people of all ages. Online games are popular because they can be played by almost anybody who has an Internet connection. These games can be downloaded from the Internet to a personal computer or other electronic device such as a cell phone or iPod Touch. There are many types of online games and many of them can be enjoyed alone or with other players.
One of the most interesting types of poker online games studied was social behavior and its influence on academic performance. The results of this study were published in the Journal of the Learning Sciences. The study comprised of two parts. In the first part, a survey was sent to a sample of students from four colleges; the second part involved the use of an online gaming platform to play selective versions of popular online games and report their own personal experiences with these games.
The results of the survey showed that social behavior and its effect on academic performance can be influenced by a participant’s perception of a game’s difficulty. People who feel that the game needs more effort to win or will take longer to beat the computer played tend to rate it as harder than a participant who thinks that the game is easy to beat. Another aspect of social behavior that the online games study tried to test was the developer’s ability to monitor and respond to feedback. Many developers make available various forms of support such as message boards, forums, chats and private messages. Respondents from all but the most hard core gamers seemed to enjoy these features and found that they offered a sense of security in playing with other like-minded people.
There were also some people from the survey who suggested that there might be some benefits to playing on-line games since it provides a way for members to meet and interact with others. Members could play games with people outside of their geographic area and get a break from the pressures of their everyday lives. They could chat and discuss things that might otherwise not be possible. Other benefits of the game experience might be that members get to practice their skill against stronger opponents and build up their confidence. This might help improve their academic performance.
In the final analysis, the majority of the participants who participated in the studies did not see a significant difference between playing video games and having fun online. It is important for developers to create safety settings so that players can feel safe and know that their identity and privacy are protected at all times. This can go a long way toward ensuring that the gaming experience is as enjoyable for everyone as possible.
The study concludes that there is a slight, but significant relationship between playing on-line games and students’ performance in a standardized test. However, it is unclear whether the relationships are statistically significant or if there is some other factor that accounts for the results. More research is needed to determine what the effect would be if it were a true relationship. There are mixed results with on-line games and school grades.
